The National Jazz Workshop is proud to continue its partnership with Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University to provide an exciting, challenging and innovative program for jazz students of all ages and abilities.

​

Shenandoah Conservatory is home to more than 600 students enrolled in baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral programs in the areas of music, theatre and dance. Virginia’s oldest and premier center for performing arts training, the conservatory is led by a dynamic faculty composed of performers and scholars of national and international repute.

 

Shenandoah University, established in 1875, is a private, nationally recognized university that blends professional career experiences with liberal education. It is located in scenic Winchester, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, about 70 miles northwest of Washington, D.C.

Schedule

The National Jazz Workshop summer program schedule is filled with a dynamic lineup of classes, rehearsals, jam sessions, master classes, concerts, and more.

What To Bring

The National Jazz Workshop will be a fast-paced, intense program. To get the most out of this learning experience, please bring the following:

  • A laptop, pad, or paper notebook for notes

  • Staff paper

  • Pencils

  • Backpack or something to carry class supplies and handouts

  • Your instrument (if playing)

  • Practice and/or performance amp (if applicable)

  • Cymbals and drum sticks (if applicable)

  • Pianos and/or electric keyboards will be available for ensembles and in practice rooms

  • If you have large equipment, a wheeled carrier is best for fast transport and comfort.

  • Large equipment can be left in designated rooms and locked overnight or stored in your dorm room if applicable.

If you will be staying on campus for the week, please bring the following dormitory-related items:

  • Twin sheets (XL)

  • Blanket

  • Pillow

  • Towel

  • Toiletries 

  • Fan (dorm is air-conditioned, but some do bring small fans)

 

Dress for the week is casual. Most participants wear shorts all week including the final concert.

Campus Residents Information

If you will be staying on campus for the week, please bring the following dormitory-related items:​

  • Twin sheets (XL)

  • Blanket

  • Pillow

  • Towel

  • Toiletries

Commuter

Information

  • Please arrive no later than 8:15am each morning.

  • Please pick up and drop off in the Armstrong Hall parking area.

  • Evening pickup (after concert) is 9:00pm.

  • Commuters under age 18 staying for the 9:00pm student jam session will need to be picked up at 10:00pm in the Armstrong Hall parking area.

  • Those parking cars for the day can also use this area an/or the adjacent parking garage.

  • Any minor departing campus before 9:00pm will need to inform the NJW staff and a parent or guardian must speak with NJW staff to verify.

  • All pickups of minors will be monitored by an NJW staff member

Medications

All medications for those under age 18 must be reviewed by parent/guardian and the National Jazz Workshop staff to determine if it needs to be continually monitored by workshop staff.

Meals & Lodging

Lodging is available for workshop participants in the Shenandoah University dormitories. Adult chaperones will stay in the dormitories and supervise minors. Dormitories are air conditioned. Minors will be assigned a roommate. Participants may designate a preferred roommate and NJW will try to honor all such requests. Adults may request a private room. Linens are not provided, so please bring your own.

All workshop participants staying on campus will have a meal plan included in their fee. Adults may purchase meals on their own.

FAQs

What is the dress for National Jazz Workshop?

All dress including concert performances is casual. Shorts, t-shirts, and summer apparel is expected.

Can parents attend concerts?

Yes, all concerts at the National Jazz Workshop are free and open to the public.

I play more than one instrument. Should I bring them all?

You will be contacted before to the workshop about what instruments to bring.

I have large equipment. Where can I store it?

We will have a secure room to leave equipment overnight. Please bring a wheeled device to easily move your equipment.

Will Shenandoah University have wireless internet?

Yes. We will provide information about how to connect when you arrive at check-in and registration.

How do I audition for the NJW ensemble(s)?

Ensemble audition instructions will be sent after registration.
