Student Information for 2012 Participants
Opening registration on Sunday July 8, 2012 will take place on the Funkhouser Dorm Patio (#10 on the map). Park in the adjacent parking lot and proceed to the covered patio area. In case of inclement weather an alternate location will be posted. There will be signs on campus directing you to NJW registration. After registration and dorm check in (and with the campus map given to you) you should take a walk to familiarize yourself with the SU campus.
National Jazz Workshop participants will be assigned to one of two dormitories: Funkhouser Dormitory (#10 on the map) or the University Inn (#30 on the PDF version of the map).
General "What to Bring" List for All Participants
The National Jazz Workshop will be a fast-paced, intense program. To get the most out of this learning experience, please bring the following items:- A note book or pad for taking notes
- Staff paper (NJW will have this available if needed)
- Pencils
- Back Pack or something to carry class supplies and handouts
- Your instrument (if playing)
- Practice and/or performance amp (if applicable)
- Cymbals & drum sticks (if applicable)
- Pianos and/or electric keyboards will be available for ensembles and in practice rooms
- If you have large equipment (amps, string bass, etc.) a wheeled carrier is best for fast transport and comfort.
- Large equipment can be left in designated rooms and locked overnight or stored in your dorm room if applicable.

If you will be staying on campus for the week, please bring the following dormitory-related items:- Fan
- Twin sheets (XL)
- Blanket
- Pillow
- Towel

Information for Commuters
- Please arrive no later then 08:15am each morning.
- Please pickup and dropoff in the Armstrong parking area (#4 on map).
- Evening pickup (after concert) is 9:00pm.
- Commuters under age 18 staying for the 9:00pm student jam session will need to be picked up at 10:00pm in the Armstrong parking area (#4 on map).
- Those parking cars for the day can also use this area an/or the adjacent parking garage.
- Any minor departing campus before 9:00pm will need to inform the NJW staff and a parent/guardian must speak with NJW staff to verify:
- All pickups of minors will be monitored by an NJW staff member
Medications
All medications for those under age 18 must be reviewed by parent/guardian and the National Jazz Workshop staff to determine if it needs to be continually monitored by National Jazz Workshop chaperones.Meals & Lodging
Lodging is available for workshop participants in the Shenandoah University dormitories for a fee. This fee covers five nights of lodging, from Sunday thru Friday. Adult chaperones will stay in the dormitories and supervise minors. Dormitories are air conditioned. Minors will be assigned a roommate. Participants my designate a preferred roomate and NJW will try to honor all such requests. Adults may request a private room. Linens are not provided, so please bring your own.
Workshop participants also qualify for a special rate at the historic George Washington Hotel, the official hotel of the National Jazz Workshop. To reserve lodging at the historic George Washington Hotel, call 866-845-8930. To get the special rate, use the code "National Jazz Workshop." There may also be a daily fee for parking.

Workshop participants may purchase a meal plan for the week. This covers 15 meals at the Shenandoah University dining facilities (from dinner on Sunday evening through lunch on Friday). What is the dress for NJW?
All dress including concert performances is casual. Shorts, t-shirts and summer apparel is expected.
Can parents attend concerts?
Yes, all concerts at NJW are free and open to the public.
If I double on different woodwinds should I bring them all?
You will be contacted before to the workshop about what instruments to bring.
I play guitar. Should I bring my practice amp?
Yes.
I play guitar. Should I bring an amp? Where can I store it?
Yes, we will have a secure room to leave amps and equipment overnight. Please bring a wheeled device to move your amp around easily.
I'm an arranger. Should I bring my laptop computer?
Yes, and bring any projects you are working on. You will be able to work in the Mac Lab on university computers as well.
Will the University have wireless internet?
Yes.
